Around Saint-Malo

Saint-Malo - "Semper Fidélis!"

Saint-Malo, three cities are superposed to give the old walled city a swing reputation. The bustling international harbour, intramural protected by ramparts and the seaside resort, popular for its beaches as for its thalassotherapy, are key elements of a dynamic that shines today by cultural festivals ( Etonnants Voyageurs and Route du Rock) and the departure of transoceanic sailing races.

80% rebuilt after the Second World War, Saint- Malo gives pride to its twelve centuries of history but its rugged granite was not upset by the nonchalance of a coastline dotted with islands accessible at low tide. The history museum in the large dungeon of the castle, which also houses the Town Hall tells the story of privateers and other great figures of Saint- Malo, Chateaubriand, Duguay- Trouin , Jacques Cartier. A Saint Servan, Solidor Tower, built in 1382 by the Duke of Brittany to monitor turbulent Malouins , houses the Museum of Cape Horners.

It brings to life the adventure of sailing in the long term. Saint-Malo is a starting point for many boat trips, to Britain by Brittany Ferries to Dinard with the company Corsair to the Channel Islands with Condor Ferries on the Rance aboard Chateaubriand.

Any visit to Saint-Malo starts with the ramparts. The game is to guess what in the frame of the walled city is authentically ancient. To see: the owners houses , including Asfeld hotel, one of the few not to have been destroyed in 1944 ; strongholds , including that of Holland with the statue of Jacques Cartier, the watch towers , the battlements . Medieval architecture and Renaissance Castle. At low tide, a pilgrimage to the island of Grand Be , the tomb of Chateaubriand. Fort National, where once stood the gallows of the city, was built by Vauban. It occupies an island that high tide cut the earth.

The tides at Saint-Malo

The bay of Saint-Malo knows among the strongest tides in the world. By average tide of medium water (coefficient of 95), the level of the open sea reaches 12m20 and that of the low sea 1m50, a tide (difference) of 10m70! By very high tide (coefficient 115) the sea goes up to 13m25 and goes down to 0.2 m is a difference that exceeds 13 meters.

Knowing that this variation of the sea level takes place in six hours, one imagines the power of the currents generated by the displacement of the colossal mass of water. In 2016, there will be 86 days of high tides, of which 44 will be over 100.

From Saint-Malo to Saint-Coulomb

A nightmare of stone, Rhoténeuf, last quarter of St-Malo on the coastal road to Cancale, this strange fresco carved in the cliff is the work of the Abbot Fouré. At the end of the 19th century, he spent twenty years drawing the legend of Rothéneuf. On more than 500 m², facing the sea, about 300 characters are frozen in stone since 1890.

Only a few kilometers from Saint-Malo and the hustle and bustle of its famous Sillon, lies the island Besnard, whose high cliffs stand at the entrance of Le Havre de Rothéneuf. This island is actually a peninsula connected to the coast by a sand tongue called tombolo: it is one of the protected dunes that border the huge beach of the chevrets.

Not far from Saint-Malo and Cancale, the tip of the Meinga will delight the stroller in search of tranquility and magnificent coastal landscapes, with its beautiful beaches and rocky capes. The island of Guesclin, accessible at low tide, the Guesclin cove is one of the exceptional sites of this coastline known for its huge sandy beaches, dunes and rocky peaks.
